From the time that I started my commercial photography business in Kamloops, almost 20 years ago now, I was fascinated with the unique topography and climate of the area; that had a lot to do with the fact that I grew up in Merritt, similar in so many ways, yet not quite as dramatic. The western end of Kamloops, Cinammon Ridge and the Mara Loop trail off Tranquille rd. epitomized this rugged landscape to me straight away. I took models here, hikers, athletes and even dancers to use this unique place as a backdrop for continuity or contrast in my work. So, recently I had a chance to revisit the locale for a large commercial/art installment project I’m involved with. Along with other local themes I’m producing from the area I’d been tasked with hoodoos and red tones and a weather beaten look and feel. I immediately envisioned the ridge, its contours and features were perfect for what I needed. This is not an easy place to capture the essence of however. There are proximity issues with the steep terrain, and then there is the vertical rise that leaves the perspectives difficult to keep accurate. I was there early and had to wait on the beautiful side lighting and soft clouds that I was fortunate enough to have on that day.
This is a well traveled area with one of the most popular trails in the area running right beside the heart of these images, known as the Mara Loop trail. I ventured up only a short ways on this trek but it’s a beautiful hike. Enjoy the images! For more of my work, go to my portfolio here. Cheers! Kelly
